South Korea Ferry Mt. 6:45 p.m. EDT, April 18, 2014I hear lately from many people about John Rowland. For some the question is rhetorical. Others want actual answers. But there are none, or none that satisfy. So it is with every such scandal: A once fresh-faced politician risks office, family, honor and freedom for a wad of cash. (Or that odd fetish of corrupt politicians, luxury home improvements) Eventually, he stands disgraced; family shamed; career ruined; cronies all turned, sentenced or fled. XJohn Rowland U.S. Such answers lie outside politics, or even criminal justice. Peruse a psychiatry manual, or the Internet, under such headings as "sociopathy" or "narcissism" and you'll find some relevant language, but who's to say to whom it applies? At the heart of every act of self-destruction lies a mystery. At the end of Othello, Iago, asked to explain himself, will only say, "What you know, you know." To Shakespeare, all evil is and must remain a mystery. Luckily, the issue for us isn't the mind of a lone recidivist. From his first race for state wide office, Rowland's career was marked by profound ethical lapses and serial violations of state and federal law. In all of these he was enabled, not just by his accomplices but by our political and judicial systems, by the press and, ultimately, by us all. Rowland's latest criminal indictment includes seven felony counts of conspiracy and fraudulent deception. Federal prosecutors charged him with illegally scheming to get political candidates to pay him secretly for his advice. The maximum sentences total 57 years. If convicted, he'll likely receive a lighter sentence, but he'll still be looking at a lot of jail time. He won't be the only one paying a price. Tallying up all the money spent on John Rowland in 12 years of investigating, prosecuting, impeaching, incarcerating and monitoring probation, we arrive at a sum in the millions of dollars to add to the hundreds of millions lost to his cronyism and corruption. We might have been spared some or all of this expense had we only done our jobs along the way. Running against Rowland for governor in 1994, I pointed out that since leaving Congress he'd pulled down a million dollars as a lobbyist for corporate giants including Textron, Electric Boat and United Technologies Corp. Federal laws forbade members of Congress from lobbying so soon upon leaving office and required all lobbyists to register and report their financial activities. Rowland ignored them. In the same brazen spirit in which Newt Gingrich would later claim Fannie Mae employed him as a historian, Rowland claimed he'd been hired to offer strategic advice. Only one corporation, Textron, released a copy of a Rowland contract. It expressly anticipated that he might lobby. The Justice Department declined to investigate. To the best of my memory, not one editorial was written. Thus began for Rowland an amazing run of enabling by institutions we count on to uphold ethical standards. He won the 1994 election after suppressing a police report of a domestic incident. In office, he was twice caught violating ethics laws but was allowed to pay fines without admitting guilt. He engineered an illegal $220 million loan from a quasi-public agency to infamous Enron, but legislative leaders declined to take sworn testimony on the matter. He flouted the law to hide a massive state deficit, but no elected official spoke up. Twenty years after Rowland's "corporate strategist" scam, Washington's revolving doors turn so fast Congress seems little more than a development league for K Street lobbyists, while Rowland is in jeopardy for doing essentially the same thing: violating laws that protect public integrity. In Connecticut we still rely on federal prosecutors to put our house in order. Had Rowland been held accountable for his first offense in the '90s he'd have faced a stiff fine, but not prison. Who knows where he'd be today, but better off is a safe guess. As would we all. A guy who robs a dozen banks piques our curiosity. But if he robs the same bank a dozen times, our attention turns to the bank manager. This is especially true if we're its depositors. Here we're not just depositors. We're the board of directors. It's time we did our due diligence. Let Rowland probe his own conscience and let us look to ours. Salvation of Innocents - EARTH CRISIS

RATING: 8/10PREV Hardcore potentates and animal rights activists EARTH CRISIS are back for another round with their eighth album and Candlelight Records debut, "Salvation of Innocents". This time, the band offers a multimedia experience if you seek out their tie-in comic book, "Liberator" through the Black Mask imprint. As this writer is a loud 'n proud rocker and comic nerd, this already has me smiling well before loading the music up. "Salvation of Innocents" may sound in spots the like contemporary hardcore artists who EARTH CRISIS inspired, but as the 'core scene at-large has quieted down considerably, the door is wide open for guys who'd paid the others' dues for them. There's a fair sense of justice in that. The opening numbers "De-Desensitize" and "Out of the Cages" blast like trad speed and skid hardcore rips ("Out of the Cages" being the fastest song on the album), but the dynamic of the album changes instantly afterwards. The crawling proto power shakes of "Shiver" make it one of the exception to the norm tracks on the album, stepping as far out of the hardcore gutters as EARTH CRISIS can without abandoning their identity altogether. The switch to haunted, near Gothic melodies on the choruses of "Shiver" are a huge attention-getter and not until the band briefly doubles the pace do they sound like a hardcore band on this song. The abrupt switches of themes on "Shiver" make it a genuine standout, considering the headstrong thrusts of the songs surrounding it. The continued slowing down of "Razors Through Flesh" allows Karl Buechner to viscerally describe the torture of laboratory animals so those who should stand guilty can clearly hear their indictments despite Buechner's brash hollering. If you didn't know the platform EARTH CRISIS stands on, you'd think it was a 'core-oriented death metal jam. Afterwards, "Depraved Indifference" and at least the verses of "No Reason" keeps the reins pulled back and the intended implications of violated animals' death throes are well-felt. Even "The Pallid Surgeon" keeps a checked-down pace on the verses, though loading the guitars even heavier as Karl Buechner deepens his chokes and lingers upon his animal abuse tirades. "Devoted to Death" finds the band merging standard hardcore march rhythms and double-kicked verses with singular, rock-oriented choruses tailored for a glorious headbang. Next "Into Nothingness" teases EARTH CRISIS' listeners with Dennis Merrick's tempo variations that rise in velocity then yank back to teeth-mashing stomps as Ian "Bulldog" Edwards (rumbly as ever on the album) follows suit on bass. The breakdown on this cut seethes and flows instead of interrupts, bringing the drive right to Scott Crouse and Erick Edwards, who dish a savory solo section on the dime before "Into Nothingness" skulks to a close. "Final Breath" likewise rolls through different paces, but the guitar solo is so exquisite, the colliding disorder becomes more poignant as the album's closer. As products of their time, EARTH CRISIS kicks out "Salvation of Innocents" in near nanoseconds, even with most of the songs moving at mid-tempo. EARTH CRISIS minces no words nor time in making their point. Thus "Salvation of Innocents" is a success from veteran vegans and mashers who've turned to the comics realm to help send their pro-planet and animal guardian message to the masses that grows more indifferent the larger it becomes in numbers. Steampunk comics have recently emerged as a counterculture phenomenon and beforehand, punk and hardcore inspired "Tank Girl" and "Punk Rock Jesus", and to different latitudes (with added shades of Goth), "The Crow". The books are bipolar opposites in theme, but they hit the right nerves and in the case of "Tank Girl" and "The Crow", reached their target audience before being swept into the mainstream. EARTH CRISIS hardly appear destined for the mainstream; they never have nor have they ever courted it. "Salvation of Innocents" has a weighty prospectus about it, but only certain ears will get it beyond EARTH CRISIS' perpetual inferno, even if it's designed to give Karl Buechner's hollering litany more clarity. If you don't get what he's screaming about on "De-Desensitize", you've already proven his point. COURTESY of UC SAN DIEGO Moorpark College has hired Gerred Link as the fourth men’s basketball coach in its history. When Remy McCarthy stepped down in February after nearly two decades as the Moorpark College men’s basketball head coach, he described a need for a young, hungry successor. “The young guys in our league have been beating us and beating us fair and square,” McCarthy said. “We need somebody with the energy and the desire to go out and bring guys in. Two months later, the Raiders have their own “young guy,” having hired 29-year-old UC San Diego assistant coach Gerred Link as the fourth head coach in program history. On cue, Link, who grew up in nearby Van Nuys and played point guard at the high school (Chaminade Prep), two-year (Grossmont) and four-year (Sonoma State) levels, immediately began shaping his first roster. “The first step is to the recruit the guys who are already here, making sure this is where they want to be,” Link said. “The second step is local. In an ideal world, we’d want as much local talent as possible. We want people in the community to come here and see their sons, their (relatives) play. Link spent the four previous seasons learning his trade in the NCAA Division 2 California Collegiate Athletic Association under veteran coaches Pat Fuscaldo of Sonoma State and Chris Carlson of UC San Diego, who both have links to McCarthy. Former Moorpark star Mike Meza played at UC San Diego under Carlson. Fuscaldo coached current Fresno City coach Ed Madec, who played at Oxnard College under McCarthy. “The committee did a great job of getting somebody who is going to get in here and get after it,” McCarthy said. “He’s poised, he’s confident, he comes from programs that speak our language. He’s ready to get after it and he already is. That’s what you need to do to be good here. Link was selected from a pool of 27 applicants, eight of who were interviewed. “We wanted a strong basketball background, but just as important to that was a commitment to academic success,” Moorpark athletic director Howard Davis said. “I think he fits Moorpark College brilliantly. Davis said Link reminded him of former women’s basketball head coach Lindsay Goldblatt, who was hired at 23 and developed into the coach that Cal Lutheran hired away from Raider Pavilion last fall. Link and Goldblatt are close, having known each other since elementary school. “She’s one of my best friends,” Link said. Link, who also played baseball at Los Angeles Pierce and tennis at Grossmont, spoke glowingly of his own CCCAA experience. “The level is a place for our students to prepare, whether it’s academically or athletically, to move on,” Link said. “It was what I needed athletically. Coach (Doug) Weber allowed me to play, to really blossom. He gave me the reins of the team and let me play freely. Asked to describe his basketball philosophy, Link brought up effort, attention to detail and balance. “Controlling the things you can control is important,” Link said. “One, would be effort. My expectation is that we compete on a daily basis and focusing on the little things. “I’d like to guard, I’d like to be a great defensive team. Like everyone else, I’d like to be a great offensive team, too. Link, who will take over the team’s offseason class Tuesday, has already met with key freshmen like swingman Shaquille Moore and power forward Austin Howell. “They’re great,” Link said. “They have dreams and aspirations of what they want to do and they’re willing to do what it takes to get there. Link, who will take his time to form a coaching staff, said he is glad McCarthy, now the full-time women’s basketball coach, is still on campus to help. “I feel lucky to still have him here next to me on campus,” Link said. “It’s only beneficial for me. Deacons Rebound With 306 In Round 2 of ACC Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. - After a tough start, Wake Forest rebounded with a solid back nine to card a round of 306 on day two of the ACC Championship at Sedgefield Country Club. The Deacons had a tough time finding the groove in the cool morning air as they made the turn in 18-over par. Thanks to a combined five birdies on the back nine, the tougher of the two sides, Wake came in just 4-over par. The Deacs are 49-over for the tournament and in 10th place. "We played much better on the back nine and I was proud of the students for hanging in there," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "This is a tough golf course when you're hitting the ball well. If you're not on top of your game, your mistakes are magnified. We gained some confidence with how we played the back nine this afternoon and hopefully we can roll that into tomorrow. Junior Allison Emrey played her final 12 holes of the day in even-par, making 10 pars and a birdie, and would post a 2-over 73. That followed an opening-round 80 and she is 11-over for the event and tied for 28th. Redshirt-freshman Elizabeth Doty, playing in her first ACC Championship, posted a second-straight solid round of 4-over 75. She bogeyed five of her first six holes but played the final 12 holes at 1-under par with birdies at Nos. 15 and 18. She leads the team at 8-over and is tied for 17th. Junior Marissa Dodd followed the theme of the day for the Deacs as she played the last 12 holes at even-par with a pair of birdies en route to a 6-over 77. Dodd is 17-over for the two rounds. Freshman Sierra Sims is a shot ahead of Dodd at 16-over after posting a second round 81. Sophomore Marianna Sims rounded-out the Deacon scorers on Friday with an 11-over 82. She is tied for 48th at 19-over par. Duke came into the day in a tie with Virginia for first but a second round 285 has allowed the two-time defending champion to open-up a 14-shot lead. The Blue Devils are 8-over par while Virginia is in second place at 22-over. In the individual race, Duke's Celine Boutier carded a 2-under 69 on Friday and is the lone player under-par in the field. The Deacons will again be paired with Boston College in the first wave off the tenth tee on Saturday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the final round. Yet they were also of concern: China’s growth pauses never cease to furrow brows but it is Japan that’s having the more halting time of it. A 60% higher consumption tax has kicked in even as the initial blush of massive stimulus program wears off and some aren’t convinced that the country is out of contraction mode after all. The retail picture since the April 1 tax hike is muddy. By mid-month, jewelry and other luxury products at department stores were most affected, along with new auto sales, although a Reuters survey found most companies unfazed. The government shaved back its monthly estimate of the economy, though the Bank of Japan said things are hunky-dory. This may have made for an interesting discussion between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his chosen BOJ chief Haruhiko Kuroda when they met on Tuesday. Kuroda seems to think he’s juiced the monetary flow enough, for goodness sakes, and Abe was said not to push further. BOJ’s Kuroda thinks he done enough for now. (Photo: Wikipedia) Could be that other factors than tax are weighing on Japanese as well as foreign consumers and industries–including those in China, Japan’s most sensitive trading partner. Early spring may bring the cherry blossoms but it has generally been one of those nervous periods in the capital markets, even if stock indexes have resumed climbing for the moment. The key question for Abe and Japan remains whether and when the “third arrow” in his policy quiver–economic reform, after fiscal and monetary pushes–will get shot. So far it’s been mostly talk, especially about joining a TransPacific Partnership (TPP) in trade-barrier reduction. That 12-nation negotiation remains stalled. Japan has been doing one-off deals with the likes of Australia as well as outreach to developing economies like Myanmar and India, but those aren’t going to fundamentally alter the protected status of big parts of the Japanese economy. In recent days, with a visit from U.S. President Obama looming, Abe has been promising renewed energy toward those gut reforms, as well as better etiquette in expressing the core political nationalism that contrastingly flowers beside his economic multilateralism. If a TPP pact actually came to fruition–and were extended to South Korea, not yet part of the dozen talkers–some of North Asia’s biggest economic walls could come down and Abenomics could have its best, real shot at transformation. But as of this week, that buy-in remains too taxing for the prime minister’s domestic constituencies, who are already being nicked three more yen on every 100 at the sales register. Steam's Greenlight community gave 75 more games the thumbs-up for distribution on the PC platform this week, adding a few familiar titles to the mix. Among the games that can begin start selling on Steam is Get Even, a first-person shooter from Polish developer The Farm 51. Unlike other first-person games, players jump into the memories of Get Even's main characters to make decisions that impact their personality traits as the game's story progresses. The developer spoke at length in March on films and games that explore players' perceptions of reality, which the Painkiller: Hell and Damnation developer set as a goal. Other games greenlit for distribution include pretend dogfighter Cult of the Wind, dystopian 2D point-and-click adventure game Dead Synchronicity: Tomorrow comes Today and Pivvot, which brings minimalistic arcade-style action to Steam. Pivvot achieved over 2.65 million downloads on iOS and Android and comes from Whitaker Trebella, a Chicago-based developer that shifted from music composition to programming in 2010; though he still crafted tunes for more recent games like Nimble Quest and Super Stickman Golf 2. Southland Raiders, Lady Raiders finish second in Region 3-AAA Track Meet

ALBANY — Southland Academy’s Raider and Lady Raider track teams both finished as region runner-up on Wednesday, April 16 at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. The top four individual finishers in each event and top four relay teams qualified for next week's state track meet. Individual Region 3-AAA Champions for the girls were Chris Shattles, in the 3200 and 1600 meter runs, and Madison McPherson in the shot. Shattles also finished as region runner-up in the 800, and Mary Melissa Roland was region runner-up in the 300 hurdles. McPherson finished third in the disc, as did Brandi Sellers in the 400 and Sydney Hayes in the 3200. Fourth-place finishers were Lydia Bass in the shot, Alex Exum in the disc, Sydney Hayes in the 1600, Caroline Caroline the 100, and Delanie Israel in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. The 4 x 400 relay team of Carol, Sellers, Shattles and Dallas NeSmith finished third, qualifying for the state meey. The boys had numerous region champions including Wright Calhoun in the 3200 and 1600, Josh McKie the 800, Collins Christian in the 200, and Dustin Shattles in the 100. Region runner ups were Billy Calcutt in the 3200 and 1600, Dustin Shattles in the long jump and 200, Collins Christian in the 400, and the boys 4 x 400 relay team of Christian, Calhoun, McKie and Townsend Ray. Third-place finishers were Logan Morris in the pole vault, Michael Kurtz in the high jump, and Dillan Jerkins in the shot and the disc. Fourth-place finishers were Brodie Shattles in the pole vault, Zach Calcutt in the 800, and Hunter Weldon in the shot and the disc. The 4 x 100 relay team of Brian Stone, Townsend Ray, Christian and Shattles also qualified for state. For the girls, 10 total athletes qualified for state, including sophomore Chris Shattles, freshman Madison McPherson, and eighth-graders Sydney Hayes, Lydia Bass, and Alex Exum. For the boys, 13 total athletes will make the trip to state, including sophomore Wright Calhoun, freshmen Billy Calcutt and Josh McKie, and eighth-graders Townsend Ray, Brodie Shattles, Logan Morris, and Zach Calcutt. The GISA State Meet will take place April 24-26 at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. Thursday’s events will begin at 1:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday’s events will begin at 8:45 a.m. All events on Saturday will be championship finals. Festival showcases Northern Colorado bands
Shatterproof, of Fort Collins, commands a stage during the 2013 FoCoMX. The alt-rock band returns for this year's festival. Info: focomx.focoma. With the Lollapalooza, South by Southwest and Coachella music festivals making national headlines by presenting big-name acts and attracting people from around the world, one festival stands out by rejecting that approach and striving to keep it local. This year marks the sixth installment of the Fort Collins Music eXperiment (FoCoMX), where a plethora of local music talent will be featured in their own back yard for two days, April 25-26, as they showcase the vibrancy of the Northern Colorado music scene. "We're not one of those festivals that are trying to grow or bring in national bands. We're trying to focus on local acts and keep that love alive. We've got a wealth of music from every possible genre," said Soraya Rozkuszka, press and volunteer coordinator with FoCoMX. More than 200 bands from Northern Colorado will perform over the two-day period at a variety of venues and locations throughout Fort Collins. "We have 1,300 bands submit, just from Northern Colorado," Rozkuszka said. "We had to narrow it down to 200, so you can imagine that those bands are pretty good. She said the festival provides an opportunity for music fans to connect with artists from their hometowns and to branch out and discover new genres they might not have listened to before. But it's also a good opportunity for musicians to network and find new ways to express themselves. "That's what FoCoMX is about: It's about collaborating with all these people I've wanted to play music with, but haven't because we've been too busy or whatever else. I'm thrilled. Everywhere is going to be packed," said Jason Downing, lead singer of Musketeer Gripweed, who will perform an acoustic set for the first time with fellow Lovelander Johnny Hickman of Cracker. The Downing-Hickman acoustic set, which likely will pull from the musicians' country, blues and rock styles, is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. April 26 at La Luz Mexican Grill, 200 Walnut St. in Fort Collins. "People are going to get up and shake their butts to it," Hickman said. "Jason is a superb harmonica player. It's going to be a good representation of Loveland. We're really looking forward to it. As is Longmont-based Mojomama, which will play at 9:15 p.m. April 26 at Tap N Handle, 307 S. College Ave. Bassist Paul Rogalski and his wife (and the band's vocalist) Jessica Rowland, have been playing together in Mojomama since 2002. This will be their second year performing at FoCoMX. "We were thrilled about the music buzz around Fort Collins, especially that night," Rogalski said. "Lots of people were out and very enthusiastic. It's the perfect demographic, people from their 20s to 30s. We wanted to come back to make more of an impression in the music scene. Rogalski said Mojomama hopes to win over the crowd with its "funky, blues-rock style. "Maybe if you put Susan Tedeschi with Steely Dan, with a bit of jam, like The Meters, you'll get Mojomama," he said. "Old school, yet contemporary. On the opposite end of the spectrum, those who attend FoCoMX will have an opportunity to experience the "zombie pirate polka" of Boulder-based The Widow's Bane. "Governor" Mortimer Leech, of The Widow's Bane, took a moment out of his busy schedule of drinking and undead debauchery to talk about the band's third year at FoCoMX. "Are we (playing)? Yes, I think I did hear something about that. I love FoCoMX," Leech said. "It just gets better every time, more of a s--- scene. Every other music festival in the world starts out grungy and underground, but then it gets taken over by Ticketmaster and goes completely vanilla. But FoCoMX just gets rowdier and rowdier. The Widow's Bane perform their dark polka dedicatedly as zombies with a taste for chaos and an appreciation of Fort Collins' thriving music scene. They will perform at 9 p.m. April 26 at the Aggie Theatre, 204 S. College Ave. Leech's advice to the living: "Die as quickly as possible. The afterlife is a ball. "We classify ourselves as zombie pirate polka. Mostly because we're zombies, we used to be pirates and we play polka," Leech said in a dark, British accent. "As far as being easy on the eyes ... It's quite a pleasure for people to hear zombie polka, but to lay eyes upon my beauty is unworldly. It's a good chance for the holy populous of Fort Collins to come out and see what real beauty looks like. FoCoMX also provides local restaurants and businesses a way to get involved. New to this year's festival is the Museum of Discovery, which will offer more family-oriented programming. "We give venues a chance to be a venue when they aren't usually music venues. La Luz, the taco shop in Fort Collins, is not usually a venue. The Lyric (Cinema) is usually a cinema, but they become a venue for us," Rozkuszka said. Rozkuszka said one of the most endearing parts of the festival is that it's run by a volunteer board and the nonprofit Fort Collins Musicians Association. She said it's refreshing to be a part of an event as large as FoCoMX that isn't solely about profits but, rather, about fostering a healthy music community. "We try to make everyone a headliner," Rozkuszka said. "It's all a big deal, they're all important. Our goal is not massive change but to continually support these bands, publicize these bands and maybe give new bands a chance to play their first paid gigs. There we sat in our courtyard on a lovely Sunday afternoon. It was 3:30 p.m., a time years ago that I would get anxious thinking about how the weekend was "almost over" and my mind would start racing to what I needed to do at work on Monday. But today, my toddler and I just sat together blowing bubbles. I love how much he loves bubbles. All my babies loved bubbles. I mean, really, who doesn't love bubbles? The simplicity, the ease, the fun and if they spill, the easy cleanup! Yes, bubble time is so fun, especially when you can experience it through the eyes of a child. "Buhbows," my sweet baby boy would say as I tried to reach for my iPhone. "Ma ma, buhbows!" So I put my phone down, took out my bubble wand and blew bubbles. We sat there blowing bubbles, watching them float up and pop. Again, I reached for my phone when I heard a text come through and my baby boy reached over with his chubby little arm and stopped me gently with a smile and then repeated to me (since I obviously didn't get it the first time), "Ma Ma, buhbows." Wow, how is it that a toddler who is known for being all over the place was so happy to be still and in the moment? I couldn't help but watch him enjoy the moment and watch him enjoy me actually being in the moment with him. Bubbles, I thought to myself. I can do this. Just sit and blow bubbles with my baby. It was so sweet. Thank you, baby. Mommy is here and enjoying this moment. Again, he taught me to be still while we were out shopping the outlets on the central coast over spring break. There we were, our "party of five" out doing something together and I found myself once again trying to get to the next thing on our list. Really, who has a "to-do" list on vacation? But, there I was trying to hurry up the shopping excursion so that we could grab lunch, meet at the park and hop on the road in time for his nap (yes, a perfect plan!). But, my now-2-year-old wanted to sit on a car that didn't even work despite my effort of dropping $1.50 of quarters in the little box. He was so happy just sitting there that of course I had to reach for my iPhone to take a picture. And, just as I tried to sweep him up to keep moving he reminded me to enjoy the moment, this very moment in time. Thank you baby. Mommy is here and really enjoying this moment. Being still takes practice. I have been a long-time, forever fan and wannabe yogi since the birth of my first child. I've found through the years that yoga is truly the only exercise that I can do where my mind doesn't wander. It's been a great form of stress release and I find myself always in "my happy place" when my feet touch my mat. I have tried the same at home, even meditation, and I can't seem to lose myself in the practice as I do when I go to a studio. I recently signed up for Living Fearless and couldn't make it through the first meditation without my mind wandering to my "to-do" list and my body responding anxiously the same. And, even though I have missed a full week of the online meditation course, I am committing to finishing what I've started. It's not easy. It does take practice and practice and practice. I guess "being still and in the moment" takes practice too. So instead of beating myself up about it, I am going to practice what my toddler taught me. I just need to do it until it becomes as natural as it was for us that day blowing bubbles. And you know what? When I finally took a moment to sit back and look around on that lovely Sunday afternoon, I saw beautiful flowers that were blooming all around us and the most breath-taking sky with large, fluffy, heavenly clouds that I have ever seen. Kindergarten registration begins in May

(Staff Photo: Johnny Jackson) JONESBORO — Kaylah White battled sleep as she told about her trip to see the alligators. “They have sharp things on their backs,” declared the 6-year-old. White is a kindergartner at Suder Elementary, and she had just returned with her class from a field trip to Noah’s Ark Animal Rehabilitation Center in Locust Grove. The nonprofit animal sanctuary is an inexpensive chance for children to actively learn about wildlife and nature, said Kathy Pate, the school’s kindergarten chair and one of the field trip supervisors. Pate spoke about the trip as an opportunity parents have to engage their children in the learning process. That engagement, she said, is something parents should be doing with their children at birth. She emphasized the parents’ role in preface to Clayton County Public Schools’ upcoming kindergarten registration event May 12-16. The event takes place at each elementary school daily, from 8 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., and between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Suder Elementary was abuzz Thursday closing out a day of standardized testing with after-school activities — children participating in the Campus Kids program, preschoolers making conversation as they waited in the hall, teachers gathering for a meeting in the commons area and students watering the courtyard garden. Kaylah White sat in a room drawing with her mother Yolanda White, who is also a fourth-grade teacher at the school. The youngster — who routinely asked, even at 6, what careers most interest her — said Thursday she wants to be a police officer when she grows up. “She’s changed it four times this year,” said her mother. Her daughter’s list of career options has grown quickly from being a teacher or doctor. Pate said that sort of engagement is vital for students to develop the type of confidence that will inspire them in the classroom. She offered more advice for parents with young children, particularly those who will be registering their would-be kindergartners in May. Parents should provide enriching experiences consistently to children by talking to them and asking them questions about the world around them, she said. “Inconsistencies definitely have a long-term negative affect,” said Pate. “It’s very helpful if parents have been reading to children on a daily basis. And have them express themselves with crayons, pencils and paints — something other than a remote control. Pate said she had her children write in journals when they were smaller to help build their self-confidence and increase the likelihood they would want to participate in activities at school. “Celebrate your children’s accomplishments and make them feel important,” she said. “I don’t know if parents listen enough to their children. Pate said parents should be ready to be regularly involved and take ownership of their children’s education. She said children need to see that their parents value education and see it as a priority. Demonstrated responsibility is infectious too. She said parents who make sure kids consistently have what they need, such as school supplies and the proper school uniform, tend to raise more confident students. Yolanda White agreed. She said parents are the primary examples for their children and contribute most to their development. “We have the children between 7:15 and 2:15 and that’s not enough,” she said. “I teach fourth grade, so by the time they get to me, I see the effects of that preparation. White said some students come to her reading above grade level, while others have fallen behind a grade level, in some cases, because consistency waned those hours and days students were not in a classroom. Pate said parents can start now preparing their children for kindergarten. She said students should know most of their letters and sounds and be able to count to 10. “Kindergarten is no longer the place you learn about letters,” said Pate. “We go through them but we really go through them at a fast pace. We start reading at the beginning of the year. She said the increased rigor in schools has successful students reading with fluency some 200 sight words before they leave kindergarten. Pate advises parents get involved in reading programs available at the public library and use routine trips to the store or wherever else as learning opportunities. White said she used flash cards and Uno playing cards with her children when they were 3, turning her lessons on colors and numbers into a game. “I made it fun,” said White. “Make it a game so they see learning can be fun. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan coach Kongzheng "KZ" Li announced Friday (April 18) his resignation as the mentor for the men's and women's diving programs. Li completed his fourth season as the head diving coach in 2013-14. "I have enjoyed my time at this great university and I am going to miss all of my divers," said Li. "I would like to thank everyone at the University of Michigan for giving me this opportunity to be the diving coach, and I wish everyone associated with Michigan Athletics the best in the future. Li coached two female divers that qualified for the NCAA Championships during his four years with the program: Carey Chen in 2014 and Amanda Lohman in 2011 and 2012. Lohman earned All-America honorable mention in the one-meter and three-meter events at the 2012 championship. In 2014, men's diver Timothy Faerber became the first U-M diver to reach the championship final of the Big Ten meet on all three boards since Jason Coben in 2003, and Chen scored on all three boards for the women at the conference championship. Li has spent his entire 21-year career as a head coach. Prior to coming to Michigan, he was co-head coach of the U.S. Elite Diving Academy in Columbus, Ohio (2009-10). Before that, Li led the National Training Centre of Diving in Melbourne, Australia, from 2006-08. His previous collegiate coaching experience came as the head diving coach at the University of Minnesota, where he produced eight NCAA All-Americans, six Big Ten champions and 45 Big Ten Championships finalists during his seven seasons (1996-2003). Li began his coaching career in 1991 as the head coach of Texas Aquatics (Austin, Texas) before heading up Team Orlando (Fla.) Diving in 1993. Li served as a head coach or coach for the USA Diving National Team on more than 20 occasions, including his instruction of divers at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. In addition, he twice coached at the World Championships (1998, 2001), three times at the World Diving Cup (1993, 1995, 1997) and once at the 1995 Pan-American Games. For his efforts, Li earned the Coach of Excellence Award at the USA Diving Senior National Championships in 1996. A distinguished diver, Li was a three-time member of the Chinese Olympic Team and won a bronze medal on the platform at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. From 1975-88, Li participated in more than 50 international competitions, winning 25 gold medals, 14 silver medals and 10 bronze medals. Li graduated from the Beijing Institute of Physical Education. Michigan will begin a national search to identify a new coach to lead the diving program. Part therapist and part coach, he urges the woman to even greater exertions. “That’s it, you’re doing great!’’ he cheers. It is one of countless such sessions Casanova, 56, has conducted with Gainesville-area clients, some of them approaching 90, all trying to restore functions in their limbs. Known as “Chagui’’ to family and friends, he has trained in areas from orthopedics and neurology to aquatics and sports medicine. Unlike many physical therapists, he also incorporates Pilates-based rehab and martial arts, especially tai chi. Each week, clients flow to his studio at Balanced Body at 4800 W. Newberry Road for his healing words and hands. Casanova said he has been doing this for 27 years, but in truth, he has been learning and practicing the healing arts his whole life. Born in Cuba and coming to the U.S. with his family at the age of 5, Casanova said his father, an orthopedic surgeon, inspired him to pursue a career in which attentive patient-care was his main priority. “We left Cuba with the notion that we had the love of God, the love of each other and knowing that an education could never be taken away from you,” he said. Casanova remembers shadowing his father in the emergency room at St. James’ Hospital in Newark, N.J. Casanova was known as “Little Doc” by his father’s colleagues because of how often he tagged along. “My dad had impeccable bedside manners,” he said. ‘’The man was unbelievable. One time, a man who had been in a motorcycle accident was rushed to the emergency room. Casanova’s father opened the curtain, “and all I could see was this man’s back, and he was bleeding and he had lost all the skin on his backside,” Casanova said. The man was shaking. Casanova remembers how his father assured the man he was going to be fine by putting his hand on his knee and saying, “I’m gonna help you get better. “That man’s shoulders just dropped [when my father said that],” Casanova said. Casanova’s father eventually moved his family to a different part of New Jersey, where he became a coach for many high school teams. He often would help take care of athletes’ injuries after games and on the weekends, Casanova said of his father. Some of the athletes would receive further treatment at the Kessler Rehab Institute in West Orange, N.J. Casanova recalls that at the age of 10, he would sneak away from the orthopedic section of the institute and observe the neurological therapists. He was inspired by how they treated patients who suffered from cases ranging from spinal cord injuries to cerebral palsy. Casanova earned degrees in chemistry and nutritional biochemistry at the University of Florida and got a job at UF’s College of Medicine working with the late Dr. Robert Cade and Dr. Craig Tisher, former dean of the College of Medicine. Throughout it all, Casanova clung to a dream of becoming a physical therapist. “I got accepted into six medical schools and turned them all down,” he said. He applied to UF’s Physical Therapy program, and on the last day the admissions office was interviewing prospective students, he still had not heard from them. “My ex-wife said to me, ‘You’re gonna wait for the mail? Why don’t you just go to the school and check it out?” he remembers. He went to the school, and a secretary told him they had not received his application. “I said, ‘That can’t be true because I have a certified letter here that says you have. I’m going to sit out in the hallway until you find it,” he said. Casanova meditated in a hallway for about 45 minutes until he felt “warmth in front of him.” When he opened his eyes, it was the secretary saying she had found his chart under some old phone books they were planning on throwing away. He got an interview on the spot. “I didn’t know you had to dress up to the nines [for the interview]. I wore a cut-off silk shirt, earrings, Kung-Fu shoes … and a pair of jeans. I thought, ‘Oh, damn, I’ve lost this already. I shouldn’t even try,’” he said. Three instructors from the program interviewed six students at a time. Casanova said that as they asked questions, he quickly remembered the other interviewees’ responses and used them in his own responses. To this day, he says his ease with people and “quick familiarity” left an impression on the interviewers. He later learned that 930 people had applied for 28 positions. He was one of three people in his group who were accepted into the PT program. “I knew that the guy upstairs wanted me to be a PT,” he said. Casanova began learning about martial arts when he was 13 and joined a school wrestling team. That led him to earn ranks in judo, taekwondo, aikido and eventually tai chi, which has become part of his practice. In the tai chi classes he leads at Balanced Body, Casanova teaches the ideas of balance and of the spirit and physical body being centered. Tai chi, he said, benefits people because of the weight-bearing aspect of its movements. It also enables “chi” to be extended throughout the bones of the body, creating what is called a piezoelectric effect on the bone. This small charge, he explained, stimulates the bone to grow thicker and stronger. Casanova concentrates on a fundamental neuromuscular approach to re-educate the person’s system to move in ways that were limited because of injuries or neurological disorders. He emphasized the importance of this approach when it comes to improving the daily lives of his patients. “Just to bring the arm up overhead to reach for something in the cupboard, there are a lot of things that entails,’’ he said. “You have to have a stable trunk, the shoulder blade needs to be working properly, the shoulder needs to move properly in its socket. It all has to happen in a concerted, synergistic way. Through all of Casanova’s various trainings and techniques, there is one constant theme. Like his father before him, his uses the “magic in his hands’’ to tap into the person’s own rehabilitative powers. That’s one reason he employs the quiet martial art of tai chi to help heal his patients. The word “chi,” he noted, means life force.
