South Korea Ferry Mt. 6:45 p.m. EDT, April 18, 2014I hear lately from many people about John Rowland. For some the question is rhetorical. Others want actual answers. But there are none, or none that satisfy. So it is with every such scandal: A once fresh-faced politician risks office, family, honor and freedom for a wad of cash. (Or that odd fetish of corrupt politicians, luxury home improvements) Eventually, he stands disgraced; family shamed; career ruined; cronies all turned, sentenced or fled. XJohn Rowland U.S. Such answers lie outside politics, or even criminal justice. Peruse a psychiatry manual, or the Internet, under such headings as "sociopathy" or "narcissism" and you'll find some relevant language, but who's to say to whom it applies? At the heart of every act of self-destruction lies a mystery. At the end of Othello, Iago, asked to explain himself, will only say, "What you know, you know." To Shakespeare, all evil is and must remain a mystery. Luckily, the issue for us isn't the mind of a lone recidivist. From his first race for state wide office, Rowland's career was marked by profound ethical lapses and serial violations of state and federal law. In all of these he was enabled, not just by his accomplices but by our political and judicial systems, by the press and, ultimately, by us all. Rowland's latest criminal indictment includes seven felony counts of conspiracy and fraudulent deception. Federal prosecutors charged him with illegally scheming to get political candidates to pay him secretly for his advice. The maximum sentences total 57 years. If convicted, he'll likely receive a lighter sentence, but he'll still be looking at a lot of jail time. He won't be the only one paying a price. Tallying up all the money spent on John Rowland in 12 years of investigating, prosecuting, impeaching, incarcerating and monitoring probation, we arrive at a sum in the millions of dollars to add to the hundreds of millions lost to his cronyism and corruption. We might have been spared some or all of this expense had we only done our jobs along the way. Running against Rowland for governor in 1994, I pointed out that since leaving Congress he'd pulled down a million dollars as a lobbyist for corporate giants including Textron, Electric Boat and United Technologies Corp. Federal laws forbade members of Congress from lobbying so soon upon leaving office and required all lobbyists to register and report their financial activities. Rowland ignored them. In the same brazen spirit in which Newt Gingrich would later claim Fannie Mae employed him as a historian, Rowland claimed he'd been hired to offer strategic advice. Only one corporation, Textron, released a copy of a Rowland contract. It expressly anticipated that he might lobby. The Justice Department declined to investigate. To the best of my memory, not one editorial was written. Thus began for Rowland an amazing run of enabling by institutions we count on to uphold ethical standards. He won the 1994 election after suppressing a police report of a domestic incident. In office, he was twice caught violating ethics laws but was allowed to pay fines without admitting guilt. He engineered an illegal $220 million loan from a quasi-public agency to infamous Enron, but legislative leaders declined to take sworn testimony on the matter. He flouted the law to hide a massive state deficit, but no elected official spoke up. Twenty years after Rowland's "corporate strategist" scam, Washington's revolving doors turn so fast Congress seems little more than a development league for K Street lobbyists, while Rowland is in jeopardy for doing essentially the same thing: violating laws that protect public integrity. In Connecticut we still rely on federal prosecutors to put our house in order. Had Rowland been held accountable for his first offense in the '90s he'd have faced a stiff fine, but not prison. Who knows where he'd be today, but better off is a safe guess. As would we all. A guy who robs a dozen banks piques our curiosity. But if he robs the same bank a dozen times, our attention turns to the bank manager. This is especially true if we're its depositors. Here we're not just depositors. We're the board of directors. It's time we did our due diligence. Let Rowland probe his own conscience and let us look to ours. RATING: 8/10PREV Hardcore potentates and animal rights activists EARTH CRISIS are back for another round with their eighth album and Candlelight Records debut, "Salvation of Innocents". This time, the band offers a multimedia experience if you seek out their tie-in comic book, "Liberator" through the Black Mask imprint. As this writer is a loud 'n proud rocker and comic nerd, this already has me smiling well before loading the music up. "Salvation of Innocents" may sound in spots the like contemporary hardcore artists who EARTH CRISIS inspired, but as the 'core scene at-large has quieted down considerably, the door is wide open for guys who'd paid the others' dues for them. There's a fair sense of justice in that. The opening numbers "De-Desensitize" and "Out of the Cages" blast like trad speed and skid hardcore rips ("Out of the Cages" being the fastest song on the album), but the dynamic of the album changes instantly afterwards. The crawling proto power shakes of "Shiver" make it one of the exception to the norm tracks on the album, stepping as far out of the hardcore gutters as EARTH CRISIS can without abandoning their identity altogether. The switch to haunted, near Gothic melodies on the choruses of "Shiver" are a huge attention-getter and not until the band briefly doubles the pace do they sound like a hardcore band on this song. The abrupt switches of themes on "Shiver" make it a genuine standout, considering the headstrong thrusts of the songs surrounding it. The continued slowing down of "Razors Through Flesh" allows Karl Buechner to viscerally describe the torture of laboratory animals so those who should stand guilty can clearly hear their indictments despite Buechner's brash hollering. If you didn't know the platform EARTH CRISIS stands on, you'd think it was a 'core-oriented death metal jam. Afterwards, "Depraved Indifference" and at least the verses of "No Reason" keeps the reins pulled back and the intended implications of violated animals' death throes are well-felt. Even "The Pallid Surgeon" keeps a checked-down pace on the verses, though loading the guitars even heavier as Karl Buechner deepens his chokes and lingers upon his animal abuse tirades. "Devoted to Death" finds the band merging standard hardcore march rhythms and double-kicked verses with singular, rock-oriented choruses tailored for a glorious headbang. Next "Into Nothingness" teases EARTH CRISIS' listeners with Dennis Merrick's tempo variations that rise in velocity then yank back to teeth-mashing stomps as Ian "Bulldog" Edwards (rumbly as ever on the album) follows suit on bass. The breakdown on this cut seethes and flows instead of interrupts, bringing the drive right to Scott Crouse and Erick Edwards, who dish a savory solo section on the dime before "Into Nothingness" skulks to a close. "Final Breath" likewise rolls through different paces, but the guitar solo is so exquisite, the colliding disorder becomes more poignant as the album's closer. As products of their time, EARTH CRISIS kicks out "Salvation of Innocents" in near nanoseconds, even with most of the songs moving at mid-tempo. EARTH CRISIS minces no words nor time in making their point. Thus "Salvation of Innocents" is a success from veteran vegans and mashers who've turned to the comics realm to help send their pro-planet and animal guardian message to the masses that grows more indifferent the larger it becomes in numbers. Steampunk comics have recently emerged as a counterculture phenomenon and beforehand, punk and hardcore inspired "Tank Girl" and "Punk Rock Jesus", and to different latitudes (with added shades of Goth), "The Crow". The books are bipolar opposites in theme, but they hit the right nerves and in the case of "Tank Girl" and "The Crow", reached their target audience before being swept into the mainstream. EARTH CRISIS hardly appear destined for the mainstream; they never have nor have they ever courted it. "Salvation of Innocents" has a weighty prospectus about it, but only certain ears will get it beyond EARTH CRISIS' perpetual inferno, even if it's designed to give Karl Buechner's hollering litany more clarity. If you don't get what he's screaming about on "De-Desensitize", you've already proven his point. COURTESY of UC SAN DIEGO Moorpark College has hired Gerred Link as the fourth men’s basketball coach in its history. When Remy McCarthy stepped down in February after nearly two decades as the Moorpark College men’s basketball head coach, he described a need for a young, hungry successor. “The young guys in our league have been beating us and beating us fair and square,” McCarthy said. “We need somebody with the energy and the desire to go out and bring guys in. Two months later, the Raiders have their own “young guy,” having hired 29-year-old UC San Diego assistant coach Gerred Link as the fourth head coach in program history. On cue, Link, who grew up in nearby Van Nuys and played point guard at the high school (Chaminade Prep), two-year (Grossmont) and four-year (Sonoma State) levels, immediately began shaping his first roster. “The first step is to the recruit the guys who are already here, making sure this is where they want to be,” Link said. “The second step is local. In an ideal world, we’d want as much local talent as possible. We want people in the community to come here and see their sons, their (relatives) play. Link spent the four previous seasons learning his trade in the NCAA Division 2 California Collegiate Athletic Association under veteran coaches Pat Fuscaldo of Sonoma State and Chris Carlson of UC San Diego, who both have links to McCarthy. Former Moorpark star Mike Meza played at UC San Diego under Carlson. Fuscaldo coached current Fresno City coach Ed Madec, who played at Oxnard College under McCarthy. “The committee did a great job of getting somebody who is going to get in here and get after it,” McCarthy said. “He’s poised, he’s confident, he comes from programs that speak our language. He’s ready to get after it and he already is. That’s what you need to do to be good here. Link was selected from a pool of 27 applicants, eight of who were interviewed. “We wanted a strong basketball background, but just as important to that was a commitment to academic success,” Moorpark athletic director Howard Davis said. “I think he fits Moorpark College brilliantly. Davis said Link reminded him of former women’s basketball head coach Lindsay Goldblatt, who was hired at 23 and developed into the coach that Cal Lutheran hired away from Raider Pavilion last fall. Link and Goldblatt are close, having known each other since elementary school. “She’s one of my best friends,” Link said. Link, who also played baseball at Los Angeles Pierce and tennis at Grossmont, spoke glowingly of his own CCCAA experience. “The level is a place for our students to prepare, whether it’s academically or athletically, to move on,” Link said. “It was what I needed athletically. Coach (Doug) Weber allowed me to play, to really blossom. He gave me the reins of the team and let me play freely. Asked to describe his basketball philosophy, Link brought up effort, attention to detail and balance. “Controlling the things you can control is important,” Link said. “One, would be effort. My expectation is that we compete on a daily basis and focusing on the little things. “I’d like to guard, I’d like to be a great defensive team. Like everyone else, I’d like to be a great offensive team, too. Link, who will take over the team’s offseason class Tuesday, has already met with key freshmen like swingman Shaquille Moore and power forward Austin Howell. “They’re great,” Link said. “They have dreams and aspirations of what they want to do and they’re willing to do what it takes to get there. Link, who will take his time to form a coaching staff, said he is glad McCarthy, now the full-time women’s basketball coach, is still on campus to help. “I feel lucky to still have him here next to me on campus,” Link said. “It’s only beneficial for me. GREENSBORO, N.C. - After a tough start, Wake Forest rebounded with a solid back nine to card a round of 306 on day two of the ACC Championship at Sedgefield Country Club. The Deacons had a tough time finding the groove in the cool morning air as they made the turn in 18-over par. Thanks to a combined five birdies on the back nine, the tougher of the two sides, Wake came in just 4-over par. The Deacs are 49-over for the tournament and in 10th place. "We played much better on the back nine and I was proud of the students for hanging in there," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "This is a tough golf course when you're hitting the ball well. If you're not on top of your game, your mistakes are magnified. We gained some confidence with how we played the back nine this afternoon and hopefully we can roll that into tomorrow. Junior Allison Emrey played her final 12 holes of the day in even-par, making 10 pars and a birdie, and would post a 2-over 73. That followed an opening-round 80 and she is 11-over for the event and tied for 28th. Redshirt-freshman Elizabeth Doty, playing in her first ACC Championship, posted a second-straight solid round of 4-over 75. She bogeyed five of her first six holes but played the final 12 holes at 1-under par with birdies at Nos. 15 and 18. She leads the team at 8-over and is tied for 17th. Junior Marissa Dodd followed the theme of the day for the Deacs as she played the last 12 holes at even-par with a pair of birdies en route to a 6-over 77. Dodd is 17-over for the two rounds. Freshman Sierra Sims is a shot ahead of Dodd at 16-over after posting a second round 81. Sophomore Marianna Sims rounded-out the Deacon scorers on Friday with an 11-over 82. She is tied for 48th at 19-over par. Duke came into the day in a tie with Virginia for first but a second round 285 has allowed the two-time defending champion to open-up a 14-shot lead. The Blue Devils are 8-over par while Virginia is in second place at 22-over. In the individual race, Duke's Celine Boutier carded a 2-under 69 on Friday and is the lone player under-par in the field. The Deacons will again be paired with Boston College in the first wave off the tenth tee on Saturday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the final round. Yet they were also of concern: China’s growth pauses never cease to furrow brows but it is Japan that’s having the more halting time of it. A 60% higher consumption tax has kicked in even as the initial blush of massive stimulus program wears off and some aren’t convinced that the country is out of contraction mode after all. The retail picture since the April 1 tax hike is muddy. By mid-month, jewelry and other luxury products at department stores were most affected, along with new auto sales, although a Reuters survey found most companies unfazed. The government shaved back its monthly estimate of the economy, though the Bank of Japan said things are hunky-dory. This may have made for an interesting discussion between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his chosen BOJ chief Haruhiko Kuroda when they met on Tuesday. Kuroda seems to think he’s juiced the monetary flow enough, for goodness sakes, and Abe was said not to push further. BOJ’s Kuroda thinks he done enough for now. (Photo: Wikipedia) Could be that other factors than tax are weighing on Japanese as well as foreign consumers and industries–including those in China, Japan’s most sensitive trading partner. Early spring may bring the cherry blossoms but it has generally been one of those nervous periods in the capital markets, even if stock indexes have resumed climbing for the moment. The key question for Abe and Japan remains whether and when the “third arrow” in his policy quiver–economic reform, after fiscal and monetary pushes–will get shot. So far it’s been mostly talk, especially about joining a TransPacific Partnership (TPP) in trade-barrier reduction. That 12-nation negotiation remains stalled. Japan has been doing one-off deals with the likes of Australia as well as outreach to developing economies like Myanmar and India, but those aren’t going to fundamentally alter the protected status of big parts of the Japanese economy. In recent days, with a visit from U.S. President Obama looming, Abe has been promising renewed energy toward those gut reforms, as well as better etiquette in expressing the core political nationalism that contrastingly flowers beside his economic multilateralism. If a TPP pact actually came to fruition–and were extended to South Korea, not yet part of the dozen talkers–some of North Asia’s biggest economic walls could come down and Abenomics could have its best, real shot at transformation. But as of this week, that buy-in remains too taxing for the prime minister’s domestic constituencies, who are already being nicked three more yen on every 100 at the sales register. ALBANY — Southland Academy’s Raider and Lady Raider track teams both finished as region runner-up on Wednesday, April 16 at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. The top four individual finishers in each event and top four relay teams qualified for next week's state track meet. Individual Region 3-AAA Champions for the girls were Chris Shattles, in the 3200 and 1600 meter runs, and Madison McPherson in the shot. Shattles also finished as region runner-up in the 800, and Mary Melissa Roland was region runner-up in the 300 hurdles. McPherson finished third in the disc, as did Brandi Sellers in the 400 and Sydney Hayes in the 3200. Fourth-place finishers were Lydia Bass in the shot, Alex Exum in the disc, Sydney Hayes in the 1600, Caroline Caroline the 100, and Delanie Israel in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. The 4 x 400 relay team of Carol, Sellers, Shattles and Dallas NeSmith finished third, qualifying for the state meey. The boys had numerous region champions including Wright Calhoun in the 3200 and 1600, Josh McKie the 800, Collins Christian in the 200, and Dustin Shattles in the 100. Region runner ups were Billy Calcutt in the 3200 and 1600, Dustin Shattles in the long jump and 200, Collins Christian in the 400, and the boys 4 x 400 relay team of Christian, Calhoun, McKie and Townsend Ray. Third-place finishers were Logan Morris in the pole vault, Michael Kurtz in the high jump, and Dillan Jerkins in the shot and the disc. Fourth-place finishers were Brodie Shattles in the pole vault, Zach Calcutt in the 800, and Hunter Weldon in the shot and the disc. The 4 x 100 relay team of Brian Stone, Townsend Ray, Christian and Shattles also qualified for state. For the girls, 10 total athletes qualified for state, including sophomore Chris Shattles, freshman Madison McPherson, and eighth-graders Sydney Hayes, Lydia Bass, and Alex Exum. For the boys, 13 total athletes will make the trip to state, including sophomore Wright Calhoun, freshmen Billy Calcutt and Josh McKie, and eighth-graders Townsend Ray, Brodie Shattles, Logan Morris, and Zach Calcutt. The GISA State Meet will take place April 24-26 at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. Thursday’s events will begin at 1:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday’s events will begin at 8:45 a.m. All events on Saturday will be championship finals.
